Student Ministries are often met with students who are dealing with feelings of unloved, unwanted, and not appreciated, and in some cases, not seeing the image of Christ being lived out in the homes. Eager to learn about and develop a relationship with God, Student Ministry can help students grow in their faith. They may walk in the door with a lot of hurt and problems, but once the students gain the trust of the ones leading them, we often see them transformed by the love of Jesus. Here are three steps we take to help students grow:
Creating a Safe Space
The Bible teaches us that creating a welcoming and safe space for students involves offering protection, unconditional love, trust, and honest communication rooted in God’s love and grace. It highlights the importance of establishing environments where students feel comfortable enough to be vulnerable and honest without fearing judgment. Setting clear expectations and using biblical principles help foster an atmosphere of encouragement and compassion. While God is the ultimate ‘safe space,’ we are called to reflect this safety to others through our actions, creating a warm and supportive community.
Ministry leaders should foster an environment where students feel comfortable being open and honest, sharing their struggles without fear of judgment or shame. As seen in the story of Jesus and the children (Mark 10:13-16), Jesus defended the defenseless. When parents brought children to Jesus, the disciples rebuked them, thinking they were a bother. Jesus, however, was indignant with his disciples and welcomed the children, blessing and reaffirming their value. In a time when children had the lowest social standing, Jesus beautifully reminded everyone of their worth by encouraging his disciples to embrace a simple, childlike faith. It is a lovely reminder that everyone is genuinely valued. This serves as a model for ministry: welcoming the vulnerable, shielding them from dismissive attitudes, and affirming their worth in God’s kingdom. As ministry leaders, we must be willing to share our struggles and challenges, our faithful journey, and the highs and lows that come with it. Opening the door of transparency regarding our faith journey with our students will allow them to trust and follow our lead.
Encourage Personal Devotion
Ministry leaders should encourage personal reflection by giving students time and space to consider their faith and relationship with God. Three Scripture references to consider when inspiring students to reflect on their faith include Matthew 6:6, which states, “But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door, and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” This verse highlights the importance of finding a private space for prayer, free from distractions. Psalm 46:10 urges us to “Be still, and know that I am God,” emphasizing the need to pause and reflect on God’s presence. Joshua 1:8-9 advises us to “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful,” guiding us to dedicate time to scripture meditation as a way to reflect.
Encouraging students to dedicate time each day to spend with God will strengthen their faith journey and promote a culture of spiritual growth. Helping students develop spiritual disciplines like prayer, reading God’s Word, journaling, or sharing their faith with others will also assist them in building vital faith skills.
Encouraging and Supporting Parents and Guardians
Ministry leaders should encourage parents and guardians to actively participate in student ministry by sharing their insights, providing support, and engaging in activities. Inviting families to participate in the student ministry enables them to serve together. Student Ministry leaders should be ready to provide resources and guidance as parents help nurture their children’s faith development. Resources such as conversation starters for family discussions, guides for spiritual talks at home, and tools to help them connect with their children’s faith journey can make a difference. Building strong partnerships with parents and guardians can enhance the effectiveness of student ministry and support students’ spiritual growth.
Understanding the importance of discussing key topics such as biblical truths, personal faith journeys, morality, and navigating real-world challenges from a Christian perspective, two recommended conversation starters for families are (1) Parent Partner by LifeWay, conversation guides that helps parents have those challenging conversations with their children from a scriptural perspective on Identity & Purpose, Relationships, Mental Health, Cultural Topics, and Discipleship. The second Christian Culture Kids is designed for parents to engage in conversations with children as young as age six. Christian Culture Kids offers faith-based learning experiences that nurture Christian values and strengthen family bonds. Christian Culture promotes learning and growth while helping children develop critical thinking, communication skills, spiritual awareness, and Bible knowledge.
